oligopsony: a market situation in which each of a few buyers exerts a disproportionate influence on the market

This word is becoming significant as the cloud providers drive the IT infrastructure market. Amazon, Facebook, Google, Alibaba and other mega-cloud providers are driving the next generation of products from the source. Instead of relying on ‘middle men’ like HPE, Cisco and DellEMC they work with chipmakers, manufacturers and open source projects to build their own unique infrastructure.

Enterprise IT no longer drives the direction of the technology. A decade ago, desktops & laptops were built for companies to buy first. Phones like the Blackberry focussed corporate features and ignored the consumer market. It was a mass market that is becoming marginalised and technology like Kubernetes is based on the castoffs of big cloud businesses.
